How to stop Windows 10 auto-update

Even though automatic system updates are beneficial to your PC, sometimes you might need to have them disabled or made manual. If that is your current case, we will show you two methods how you can do that on your Windows 10 OS by yourself.

Method 1: Prevent auto-update on a certain network connection. With this method, you will be able to stop automatic updates for the particular network connection that your PC is currently using.

Auto updates would still be turned on for other connections, unless you use the following method on them as well.

This method works only for WiFi connections. If you are directly connected to the internet via a network cable, try our second method.

Open your Start Menu and type Settings. Click on the first result.

Go to Network & Internet > Wi-Fi.

Click on Manage Known Networks.

Select the Wi-Fi network you’re using and go to Properties.

Turn on the option Set as metered connection.

This method is supposed to prevent you from generating high data charges, in case you’re using a mobile connection with limited bandwidth. However, it can still be used on connections that are unlimited, enabling you to stop the auto-update as long as you are using Wi-Fi.

Method 2: Disable Windows Update service. This method will disable any automatic updates on your PC and is usually not recommended. Know that if you go for this option, your machine will not receive any updates and might become vulnerable. Therefore, if you do this, make sure to manually update your PC on a regular basis.

Use the Winkey+R keyboard combination and in the resulting search field type services.msc.

In the resulting Services window, look through the list searching for a services named Windows Update.

To make finding it easier, left-click on any service from the list and start hitting W until you get to Windows Update.

Once you find the service, double-click on it.

If you want to stop the automatic update only for the given moment, select Stop. If you want to disable it, so that it does not start every time you turn on your PC, set its Startup type to Manual. This means that you will have to manually turn on the service every time you want Windows to update – do not forget to do that!

Apparently, the main reasons for this error to be appearing are some improperly registered Windows security .dll files. In the paragraphs below you will find some troubleshooting techniques. We hope that you will resolve this problem by following our instructions.

We offer you a possible solution: try the System Update Readiness Tool

Visit the System Update Readiness Tool website. Look for the version of Windows and system type of your PC in the section containing Information for advanced users. After that, select the link to complete the download of the System Update Readiness Tool.

In case you are not sure which Windows version your computer belongs to, open any folder and right-click on Computer –> click on Properties, and check. Then you will just have to run this tool and rerun the Windows Update feature. In the paragraphs below we have explained how to do that for the most widely used Windows versions.

For Windows 8.1 (or Windows 8) users

Step № 1: Try running the Windows Update Troubleshooter

Step № 2: Work with System File Checker to fix the Windows files which have been damaged or corrupted. Do that in the following way:

Enter an elevated command prompt.

Type the command “sfc /scannow”.

Then the update should be installed once more.

Step №3: Use the DISM tool

If the problem still isn’t solved, Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool might be useful to resolve Windows Update corruption errors. For this purpose, follow the instructions below:

Enter an elevated command prompt.

Enter the following command “DISM.exe / Online / Cleanup-image / Restorehealth”.
Always worth remembering! In case this command is used, DISM exploits Windows Update to provide the files that are necessary for fixing the corruption errors. Nevertheless, in case your Windows Update client has already become non-functional, try running Windows installation as a repair source. Another option is the usage of a folder from a network share or from a removable source, for example a Windows DVD. For this purpose, enter the command below instead of the one above:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess

For Windows 7 users

Step №1: Open the Windows Update Troubleshooter
Step № 2: Try the System File Checker to repair damaged Windows files

If the error isn’t fixed yet, try the System File Checker tool to recover the damaged Windows files. For this purpose we have assembled the instructions below:

Enter an elevated command prompt.

Type the “sfc /scannow” command.

Install the update again. It should work.

Step № 3: Run the System Update Readiness tool

In case the issue is still present, exploit the System Update Readiness tool (CheckSur) to restore the Windows corruption errors.

Windows Vista

Step № 1: Load the Windows Update Troubleshooter
Step №2: Run the System File Checker to mend damaged Windows files

If the issue still bothers you, run the System File Checker tool to recover the corrupted Windows files. The steps below should help you with that:

Get in an elevated command prompt.

Type the “sfc /scannow” command.

Install update once more. The error shouldn’t appear again.

How to Fix Windows Update Error 0x80070522?

This guide is created to help you solve Windows Update 0x80070522 Error “Privilege Not Held”. The fix offered in the guide below works for solving the error in Windows 10 Update.

Usually, Windows 10 is developed to perform its processes automatically, which is great because this requires less interaction from the user’s side. However, sometimes this functionality may cause some issues by disabling users from the privileges to manage some basic processes and the way they function. From some random shutdowns, system restarts and process prohibitions to unplanned new installations, updates and changes, Windows 10 may leave users with no option to have control or disable some automatic activities. This may cause some permission conflicts between different system apps, which is the case with failed Windows Updates for example. In case that a Windows Update fails, the error code 0x80070522 identifies an issue related to such denied access.

Error 0x80070522 is a code which indicates that there is a problem with the privilege of the client. The message that usually accompanies this issue states “Error Privilege Not Held”, “A required privilege is not held by the client.” What this notification actually means is that Windows Update does not have the required permission to access some folders and system components and cannot download and install certain updates.

This is what the error message usually looks like:

To fix this problem, you need to use the official Update Assistant app. For that, you need to be logged in as the Administrator with administrator rights. If you are using Windows 10 as a visitor or a guest user, you will not have the administrator privilege to proceed with the steps further. Once you login, go to the official Microsoft website and download the official Update Assistant. You can do that by simply clicking the “Get the Anniversary update now” button. When the Update Assistant is downloaded, run the file to start it. A window will pop up, informing you about the advantages of the Assistant. You will also find an “Update now” button, which you need to click. This will run a compatibility check.

While the process is running, the Assistant will check your CPU, memory, and disk space. A checkmark will appear on each of these if your system is compatible. Once you have all the checkmarks checked, you should click the “Next” button. This will proceed to the update download. When the update download is completed, a notification with a timer for automatic restart will appear. It is best to close all the programs you are using and click on the “Restart now” button.

Several computer restarts will take place before finally, the user login screen appears. Select the Administrator account and login. A few new privacy options will greet you on the screen – you can customize them if you wish or else, select the “Use Express settings” option. You can also customize all options you don’t want active by scrolling down to the Privacy section. When all the settings you wish to adjust are ready, press “Next”. The thing that comes next are the connectivity options – you have three options to choose from, and you can safely turn off all of them. At the end, you will have to set the browser security settings. Leave them active and when you are done, click “Next”. All the settings that you did could easily be customized through the Windows 10 Settings app later on. After all the steps are completed, your Windows 10 Anniversary Update should be successfully installed on your computer and the error code 0x80070522 should be solved.

The information below has been gathered to help you deal with an error you may experience, called 0x80070070 “Microsoft Windows 10 Anniversary Update Has Failed to be Performed”. There have been numerous reports from users sharing that it has been difficult or impossible for them to apply this update. The different solutions we have provided in the guide below are to assist you in solving the issue on Windows 10 OS.

Why does error 0x80070070 occur?

There might be many diverse reasons why you may encounter the 0x80070070 error. For instance, some Audio/Video drivers might be the cause for your inability to install the Microsoft Windows 10 Anniversary update. Another cause could be your anti-malware tool. No matter what the root of your issue really is, we hope this article will help you get rid of it. Before you proceed with the implementation of the instructions in the guide that follows, please back up your system.

Possible solution №1: Try to apply the Windows 10 update by using the Media creation Tool

Some of the victims of this problem (inability to complete the installation of the update via Windows10Upgrade.28084 ) have managed to successfully fix it by downloading and using “Media Creation Tool”. So, our advice is to try to perform the installation with the help of the Media creation tool and you might end up successfully fixing your problem.

Possible solution №2: Adjust the installation of the update using the built-in troubleshooter of Windows

It could be used for detecting and solving problems on your PC automatically. Still, not every single issue can be solved with the help of this troubleshooter. However, this is the most widely exploited tool for finding solutions to various problems. Simply download this tool and try solving your 0x80070070 Error with it.

Possible solution №3: Restart the Windows Update Components manually

In some particular cases restarting the Windows Update Components might magically resolve the issue. By doing that you will repair the corrupted components of windows update. After that you will be capable of running the update successfully. For the purpose of readjusting the Windows Update Components, stick to the following instructions:

Enter Command Prompt with administrator’s rights.

As soon as the command prompt is opened, what you need to do is to terminate BITS, MSI Installer, Windows Update service and Cryptographic. Just enter the commands below into the command prompt. Don’t forget to press Enter after typing each command. This will stop the services above.

-net stop wuauserv

-net stop cryptSvc

-net stop bits

-net stop msiserver

Reset the names of the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folders. Use the following commands to rename these directories. Type them into the command prompt.

– ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old;

– ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old;

Then reboot the services which we terminated in instruction №2. In order to do that, type the commands below into the command prompt:

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

Exit the command prompt

Restart your PC and check whether the Windows Update will run this time.

Possible solution №4: Check whether your anti-malware tool prevents the Windows Update from being applied. If so, uninstall it or unauthorize it.

In some cases, the root of this issue could be the conflicts that your anti-virus program might be causing while your PC is running the update. Such conflicts might cause the update to fail. What might help you is to stop or completely uninstall your anti-virus. Some users have reported that they used to have a very popular anti-virus program and when they uninstalled it, their problem with the Anniversary update was resolved.

This might be your case as well because most anti-virus programs are programmed to protect your PC against various threats, so they might be detecting something about this update that registers as untrustworthy. However, it is always recommended to have an anti-virus tool installed so install a good one again or re-enable the old one, once your 0x80070070 Error has disappeared.

Perform the whole process in the following way:

Stop or uninstall your anti-malware tool. Remember to disconnect all external devices and disable all security programs. Download and try running the Windows 10 Anniversary Update again. Once you have successfully applied the Update, install a top-quality anti-virus program again.

How to fix Error code 0x8500201d “Something went wrong; we can’t sync right now“

This guide is created to help you fix the error message in the Mail App in Windows 10. The steps below will suggest you two methods to solve the Error code 0x8500201d and configure the Mail App account.

Recently, some users have reported issues with the Mail App in Windows 10. It seems that there is an error with the synchronization of the related account and some bugs that prevent the Mail App from receiving incoming emails. The reported error message that appears on their system states the following:

“Something went wrong; we can’t sync right now. Error code: 0x8500201d“.

What this notification signalizes is that there might be a problem with the synchronization of the Mail App account. This could be either due to some sync issues or there may be a problem with the configuration of the mail account itself. Either way, in the guide below we will show you how to fix this problem and use your Mail App again.

In case you are facing Error code 0x8500201d “Something went wrong; we can’t sync right now“ message in your Windows 10 Mail App, here are two solutions that may help you get it solved.

Method 1: Disable and Re-Enable the Mail App synchronization.

Having in mind that the first thing that Error code 0x8500201d indicates is a problem with the synchronization of your account, the first thing that you need to try in order to fix this issue is to re-enable the Mail App syncing. This can be done in a few easy steps which we will describe below:

First, you need to navigate to the Mail App.

Select “Setting” and click on the Settings button. If you are using Mail App on a smartphone or tablet, you will find the Settings option if you navigate to the bottom of the page.

Then, select “Manage Accounts”. There you will be able to see the configured accounts of your Mail App.

Simply click on the account that is unable to synchronize.

Then click on “Change Sync Settings of Email”

There you will have to disable the sync option. Once disabled, the account will no longer be visible in the list of synchronized Mail App accounts.

Close the Mail App and open it again.

Then add your account anew by re-enabling the syncing option. This should fix the error.

Method 2: Reconfigure the Mail App Account

In some cases, it could be the configured Mail App account that may be causing the Error code 0x8500201d problem. To solve it, you may need to remove the account and configure it anew. To do that, please follow the instructions below:

Open the Mail App

Go to Settings and click on Manage Account

A list of all configured accounts will appear. Select the account that is problematic.

Select “Delete” to remove the account from Mail app.

Then, close the Mail App and open it again.

Now you need to add the deleted account anew. For that, click on “Add Account”

Configure it again and if everything is right the error should have disappeared and the sync should be working again.

We hope that the two methods we gave you above will manage to help you fix the problem you are facing with the Mail App Error “we can’t sync right now” in Windows 10. In case that you know another fix that works as well, please let us know in the comments below. We will be more than happy to add it to the guide and help other people as well.

This guide aims to help you get the 0x80240fff error code solved and successfully update your system. Below you will find some tested solutions that may help you solve the problem in Windows 10 Home and Pro version.

Many Windows users who attempted to update their Windows 10 operating system have recently reported a 0x80240fff error code that prevents them from installing the available updates and successfully updating their system. This is what some affected people have been sharing as problems related to that code:

“I tried to update Windows 10 to the new version but I got error code 0x80240fff. It just acts like that it cannot even search or find new updates.”

“Windows 10 x64 clean reinstall on a desktop, get error code 0x80240fff, no result. It fails to update too.”

“I tried to do a clean boot for updating Windows 10, but it just failed to update and got error code 0x80240fff. What can I do?

According to Microsoft experts, this code may occur in the case that the Product name of the custom content is the same as an existing Category name. Let’s say you create a product within SCUP which you name “Record”. This may confuse the system when evaluating the categories because you may have an update classification also called “Record”, which has the same name as the product you created.
Fixing that issue has several possible options. However, it depends on which version of Windows 10 you are using. Here we will offer you all the tested solutions that are known to have helped to users with the 0x80240fff error code problem.

Fixing 0x80240fff error code for Pro version of Windows 10

Method 1: Switch to Defer Upgrades

From the menu find Windows Update Settings then click on Advanced Options. At the end of the page that will open, select Defer Upgrades as shown on the picture.

By doing this, your problem should be fixed, but bear in mind that your updates will be postponed because this will change your Windows update server.

Method 2: Use the Media Creation Tool

You can download the latest Windows 10 updates on your machine with the help of the Media Creation Tool. Simply choose to upgrade and Windows should perform that automatically.

Fixing 0x80240fff error code for Home version of Windows 10:

In the home version of Windows 10, the Defer Upgrades option is not available. That’s why a solution that may solve the error is to download the Media Creation Tool. This could be done from the link here. Simply follow the instruction in the tool to solve the issue.

If the solutions offered above are not working for you, the Microsoft Support team has also offered two methods that may help you fix the error code 0x80240fff. This is what they suggest you try:

Method 1: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Once you open the Windows Update troubleshooter, simply let it identify the problem and follow the offered fixing steps.

Method 2: Restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Services

To do that, this is what steps you need to follow:

Firstly, press the Windows key + R to open the “Run” box. Then type services.msc in the text box and press Enter.

Select Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) from the list that appears.

Then, click the right button of the mouse over the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), and select Properties.

In the General tab, next to Startup type, check if the Automatic (Delayed Start) is selected. If it is not, then select it and then click the Apply button.

Next to Service status, check if the service is started. Click on Start if it is not. This should solve the problem.

We hope you found the solution that worked for you in this guide. In case that you are still facing the issue, please leave us a comment. If you know another way that also works to solve the 0x80240fff error, it would be great if you share it as well.

How to solve Windows Error 0x80072EFE

The below guide works for all the latest Windows versions and is designed to help solve the issues resulting in error 0x80072EFE.

If you’ve been seeing error 0x80072EFE lately, we believe we have just the thing for you to get this problem solved. We’ve been receiving inquiries from our readers over the past few days as to what this error means and what they can do to fix it. There are quite the number of possible reasons out there, which have been suggested by many experts and amateurs alike, for error 0x80072EFE to be appearing. Sadly, there’s no single correct root of the cause that we could put our finger on, however we have managed to develop a guide that will hopefully be able to remedy the situation in your particular case. If you have dealt with this issue before and/or have happened to come up with a better solution for the said error code, we would be more than happy if you could share it with us in the comment section below. We will gladly update our guide with your fix and credit you for it. Either way, we will also be happy to know if our fixes were able to help you, so please don’t hesitate to share your experience with us.

We’ll be looking at two possible reasons for this error code to be appearing. One of them involves some kind of problems (perhaps corrupt files) with the Cartroot2 folder. The second one could be due to your Firewall preventing the install of a Windows Update.

Here are our suggestions of what you can do to resolve error 0x80072EFE:

Let’s start from the latter reason and assume your Firewall is to blame. You may be using the Windows firewall, or one provided by a third party, but whichever the case, please locate the help section of it and read how to disable the particular firewall you are using.

Once you’ve disabled the firewall, try to install Windows Updates.

After you have successfully installed the updates, please be sure to turn the firewall back on.

If you are still seeing the error, even after performing the above steps, you might want to try deleting your Cartroot2 folder. To do this:

Press the key combination of the Windows Key and R.

In the command prompt that appears, type services.mcs and hit Enter.

In the Services window find Cryptographic Service. Give it a click, then select Stop in the left pane.

Delete the Cartroot2 folder, which can be found in C: -> Windows -> System32 ->Cartroot2. Right-click on the folder and select delete. After this repeat steps 1-3, only instead of clicking Stop, click Start in the left pane.

Install updates.

How to Fix Error 0x8000ffff in Windows 10 Anniversary Update?

This guide is created to help you solve the error 0x8000ffff in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. There are two suggested fixes that may help you deal with this error.

With the release of Windows 10, there have been plenty of system update issues and errors that have been popping up and disturbing the ordinary Windows users. Countless bugs, problems and system issues keep appearing with every new update, and people sometimes face the need to fix them themselves until an update or an official fix is released. One of the recently popular issues is the Error 0x8000ffff in Windows 10 Anniversary Update. This error has been identified by some users, for which the Anniversary update is not going as smooth as for others. As reported, this disturbing error may get the update stuck and may not complete the update process in some devices.

Here is what it states:

“Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607 – Error 0x8000ffff”.

A corrupted installation Media may be the reason for this problem and unfortunately, there are not many solutions that can help you solve it.

In this guide we will show you two methods, that may help you fix the 0x8000ffff Error, which have proved to be working for most of the users. You can check them below and let us know if they work for you.

Option 1: Manual Update with Media Creation Tool

If there are any corrupt files in the update, try to do the installation manually with the help of the Media creation Tool, instead of using the upgrade assistant. Here are the steps you need to follow in order to do that:

First, you will need to download the Media creation Tool. You can do this from here.

Then, select Download Tool and Run it. Make sure you are running it as an Administrator.

Next, you will see a license page. Simply select “Accept” and continue.

To activate the process, select “Install”. This way, the manual upgrade will be performed. It is perfectly normal if during the setup process your system gets restarted a few times.

Option 2. Re-install OS and update KB

Another option, that has been reported by some users as a working solution, which has solved the 0x8000ffff Error is the re-installation of the OS: You can try to install versions KB3159706 and KB2919355 and see if the problem is fixed

There are numerous fixes available online for this error, and while none of them can guarantee you a 100% solution, in this guide we’ve selected a few, which have solved the error code 0x80073712 for some users. You won’t lose anything if you give them a try, so do take a few minutes to read them below.

What Microsoft is saying about 0x80073712

A list of potentially useful fixes for the 0x80073712 error can be found on Microsoft’s support page. Here is what the company’s experts suggest you to try:

Reset your Windows Update components. Windows 7 and Windows 8 users can do this when they run the Fixit tool. It can be found on this Microsoft webpage. Look for the Microsoft Fixit graphic under “Windows 8.1, Windows 8, and Windows 7” versions and simply click the “Run now” button.

Repair damaged Windows files with System File Checker. The System File Checker is another tool that may help you fix error 0x80073712 in case that a file in your system has been damaged.
Run the DISM tool (for Windows 8) or System Update Readiness Tool (for Windows 7) to fix corruption errors. The DISM tool works for Windows 8 and higher versions, but if you are using Windows 7, you will need to download and install the System Update Readiness tool.

Other fixes for 0x80073712 error code:

Some users have reported that they have managed to install the updates through a USB stick instead of using the Windows Update. For that, you will need an empty USB (or DVD) with at least 3GB of free space. To install the updates, go to Microsoft’s website and download the media creation tool. Then simply follow the instructions under “Upgrade to Windows 10”.

First, run the media creation tool

Next, select the option “Create installation media for another PC”

Then, choose your language, edition, and architecture.

A wizard will guide you through the steps to create the media. At the end select “Finish”.

When your media is ready, insert your USB drive (or DVD) into the computer you want to upgrade and select setup.exe.

After the upgrade starts, make sure to remove the USB drive (or DVD) before the installation restarts your device for the first time.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

First, from your Start menu, type “Troubleshooter” in the search box

Go to the Windows Update Troubleshooter and click on it to open.

Next, navigate to “System and Security” and under it click on “Fix problems with Windows Update”.

The wizard will guide you through the troubleshooting process.

When its is done, open Windows Update and try to install the update again.

The error should be gone.

Refresh your PC

Reinstalling Windows will recover any files that have been corrupted or missing, however, this is a bit too harsh of an option, since it will wipe out any programs that you have installed from outside the Windows Store. The good thing is that if you keep your OS on a separate partition, it will retain your personal folders such as Pictures, Documents, Projects, etc. Microsoft’s website has the instructions on how to do that.

This guide will help you install Windows 10 preview build 14951 on your smartphone in case that you are having issues with updating to the latest version. The fixes offered in the below guide contain some tweaks that you can do with the settings of your phone.

Last week, Microsoft released Windows 10 Mobile Build 14951 for the fast ring Insiders. However, as it usually happens, some users reported that they are having problems installing the latest update. Many of them complained that the updates are available, but when they press the download button, no download begins and the screen looks like frozen. This is a known issue that we wrote about in our article for Fixes and issues in Windows 10 build 14951, and after receiving a couple of requests from affected users, we decided to share with you a few workarounds to this issue.

Generally, it is not such a big issue if you cannot update your phone to the latest version right now, because the next Mobile build will be released in a couple of days and hopefully, the Microsoft specialists will have solved this problem by then. However, if you don’t want to wait and would like to explore the current 14951 build, there are a few things you can try in order to install this update. For that, you will need to tweak your phone settings a bit and here is what we can suggest you do:

First, you will need to plug a charge into your device, because we will be rebooting the device a few times. Then, open your Settings and navigate to Update & Security. Go to Windows Insider Program and change your device to “Slow” and then again back to “Fast”.

Turn the Airplane Mode ON from your Settings > Network & wireless > Airplane Mode.
Then navigate to Settings again and search for Time & Language > Date & Time. If “Set date and time automatically” option is “ON”, turn it “OFF”. You will need to manually change the date on the device to 7 days in the future.

Then, return to the home screen and reboot your device. After it is rebooted, you will need to turn OFF Airplane Mode from Settings > Network & wireless > Airplane Mode.

Next, you need to check for updates by following these steps: Settings > Update & Security > Phone update > Check for updates. It is OK if this process fails with an error code. You need to proceed with the next steps.

Go back to Settings > Time & Language > Date & Time and change the device date back to the current date.
Then, check for updates by navigating to this menu Settings > Update & Security > Phone update > Check for updates. This check may fail again but that is expected to happen.

Now reboot the device once again. After the reboot, you need to check for updates again from this menu Settings > Update & Security > Phone update > Check for updates. This check for updates should be successful and the downloading of 14951 build should begin.
According to the Insiders, these steps seem to offer a workaround for the Windows 10 Mobile build 14951 failing to update. However, a few users have reported that they are getting error code 80242006 after this last check for updates. If you get this error, here is what you can try to do to bypass this final error message:

Switch Insider setting to “Slow” ring and then check for updates. It will say that you are up-to-date for the Slow ring.

Then, change back to “Fast” ring and once again run the updates check. This time it should work.

This is what we have found as a working solution for now. If none of these help you cope with Windows 10 Mobile build 14951 failing to update, then you will probably need to wait a few more days until the next Mobile preview build comes out.
